2022 Nissan Frontier Overview

This is an exciting time for fans of midsize pickup trucks because Nissan has just introduced the next-generation Frontier, and the team at Marshall Motor Company is thrilled to show it off through a 2022 Nissan Frontier vs 2022 Chevrolet Colorado comparison. The third-generation Frontier has a boxier and more rugged exterior aesthetic, an upscale interior and a revised suspension that delivers one of the most comfortable rides in the class. The 2022 model year Colorado continues its second generation, which was launched for the 2015 model year. Perhaps the most notable change is that Chevrolet now offers a Trail Boss package for the LT and Z71 trim levels rather than keeping it exclusive to the ZR2.

Comparing the 2022 Nissan Frontier vs 2022 Chevrolet Colorado cab and bed options reveal a number of similarities. Nissan offers a two-door extended cab, which it calls its King Cab, and a four-door crew cab. The extended cab is paired with a 73.3-inch bed. The crew cab gives you the choice of either a 59.5-inch or 73.3-inch bed. The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is also available with either an extended or crew cab. Chevrolet pairs the extended cab with a 74.0-inch bed, and it offers the crew cab with either 61.7-inch or 74.00-inch bed. In both cases, the crew cab with the longest bed is the long wheelbase version of the vehicle. All other combinations have the standard wheelbase. The Colorado is a bit longer overall. It measures either 212.7 or 224.9 inches, and the Frontier measures either 210.2 or 224.1 inches.

Both the 2022 Nissan Frontier and the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado can seat up to four in their extended cabs and up to five in their crew cabs. The Chevrolet extended cab is a bit bigger overall, but the difference is not drastic. Both provide more than 40 inches of front legroom and less than 30 inches of rear legroom. Due to the legroom and the lack of independent ingress/egress, the extended cabs may not be suitable for larger passengers. If you do need to accommodate larger passengers in the rear seat, then we recommend the crew cab, which provides more than 30 inches of legroom in both cases. As for the base cabin, there are a lot of similarities here as well: air conditioning, cloth upholstery and a six-speaker sound system. But the Frontier boasts a larger higher-definition central touchscreen.

The 2022 Nissan Frontier is available in three trim levels: S, SV, PRO-X and PRO-4X. The PRO models are only available with the crew cab. The PRO-4X features four-wheel drive. All other Frontier trim levels are rear-wheel drive standard and offer four-wheel drive with low-range gearing as an option. The powertrain features nine-speed automatic transmission with a 3.8-liter that makes 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet offers four trim levels: WT, LT, Z71 and ZR2. It also offers three powertrains: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic, a 3.6-liter V6 with an eight-speed automatic and 2.8-liter Duramax turbo-diesel four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic. The WT and LT trim levels come standard with the four-cylinder. The V6 is optional and becomes standard with the Z71. The turbo-diesel is an option with all but the base trim level. Drivers who plan to tow often should note that the base Frontier can tow significantly more than the base Colorado: 6,720 vs 3,500 pounds.
