Vehicle Overview

Anyone in the market for a compact crossover has many options. This is the most popular segment in automotive, and the automakers are fiercely competitive as they strive to distinguish their models from all the others. The 2020 Nissan Rogue and 2020 Chevrolet Equinox are two models that deserve consumers’ attention. The new Rogue has recently arrived at Marshall Motor Company and brings with it ride comfort, passenger roominess, ample cargo volume and an impressive suite of standard driver aids. The new Equinox has also recently arrived at Chevrolet dealers serving Salina McPherson Junction City Wichita, and it brings with it a revised trim lineup and broadened standard equipment. Let’s see how these vehicles stack up in our 2020 Nissan Rogue vs 2020 Chevrolet Equinox comparison.

Wichita KS - 2020 Nissan Rogue's Overview

Exterior - 2020 Nissan Rogue

Fundamentally, the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox and Nissan Rogue are quite similar. Nissan built the Rogue on a 106.5-inch wheelbase while Chevrolet used a 107.3-inch wheelbase. But the Equinox is not as long overall: 183.1 vs 184.5 inches. The Rogue is also a bit taller and wider and offers a smidge more ground clearance. A manual liftgate is standard in both cases. Nissan offers a hands-free liftgate with the SV trim and up. Chevy offers a power liftgate with the LT, but hands-free is only available with the Premier.

Despite having a slightly smaller wheelbase, the Nissan engineers have simply done more with the space available to them. Both models can seat up to five people, but the Rogue boasts 105.8 cubic feet of passenger volume compared to 103.5 in the Equinox. Taller drivers will appreciate that the Rogue affords them more headroom and legroom: 41.6 and 43.0 inches, respectively. Differences in the rear seating are not significant, but the Equinox does offer a bit more legroom back there. However, the Rogue offers 39.3 cubic feet of core cargo area, which vies for best in class, and 70.0 cubic feet with the seat folded. The Equinox, on the other hand, provides 29.9 and 63.9 cubic feet.

An all-wheel drive option is now expected by consumers shopping small crossovers, and both Nissan and Chevrolet deliver. Both the Rogue and the Equinox are front-wheel drive standard but available as all-wheel drive at almost every trim level. The exception is the base Equinox L. The Rogue features the same powertrain across the lineup: a continuously variable automatic transmission and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 170 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. The base powertrain for the Equinox features a six-speed automatic transmission and a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 170 hp and 203 lb.-ft. You also have the option of a nine-speed automatic and a turbocharged 2.0-liter i-4 that makes 252 hp and 260 lb.-ft. That option is available on the LT trim and up.

Technology - 2020 Nissan Rogue dealer

The new Rogue features the NissanConnect infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a four-speaker audio system, satellite radio and Apple and Android integration. The base package also includes a suite of driver assistance technologies: rearview monitor, automatic headlights, high beam assist, cruise control, blind-spot warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Chevrolet offers a similar package. The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system features a 7-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker audio system, Wi-Fi hotspot and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The standard driver assistance package includes automatic high beams, a rearview camera, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane departure warning.

Standard Equipment - 2020 Nissan Rogue

The base Rogue S is wonderfully well-equipped, including a state-of-the-art infotainment setup and most of the advanced driver aids that consumers want. If you want amenities like heated seating and a hands-free powered liftgate, you just need to move up one trim level. Chevrolet offers a similar package, but you should pay particular attention to the L and LS. While the automaker positions the L as its base trim, this is a trim that you have to custom order and wait for it to arrive. The LS is the base model you’ll find at a local dealer. It is similarly equipped to the L but also has a bigger sticker price.
